The Retreat

Contributing to the technical package for this high-end one-off two million pound pad, Russell was employed by Weston Homes to help the senior technician to produce and design the drawings for the master ensuite, detailing the setting out of bathrooms and specifying the sanitaryware and controls.

 

The site is a highly innovative, low carbon, iconic 4 bedroom detached house. The plot is located at the very edge of Hainault Forest, in a clearing previously occupied by a running club changing hut, which is surrounded by protected mature trees. The contemporary house incorporates many high tech luxury features whilst achieving a very low energy consumption and CO2 emission rate, as evidenced by securing “Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5” certification.

 

The design includes a spacious ground floor, with living and open plan kitchen/dining areas and study oriented on two sides of a large south-facing open courtyard garden, located above a basement. The basement incorporates a master bedroom suite looking out on a lower courtyard water feature, a home cinema with glass ceiling, a gym and spa-style bathroom. On the first floor there are 3 further bedrooms.

 

From an energy-saving/low carbon use perspective, the house features a ground-source heat pump, photo-voltaic panels which produce electricity and extremely high insulation levels, typified by triple glazed, gas-filled windows. Whilst lighting conforms to low energy requirements, this has not impeded the use of imaginative systems to create dramatic lighting effects.

Melbourn Apartments

Russell designed 10 x 2 bedroom apartments nestled into a site between two existing dwellings, as a replacement to a petrol filling station and vehicle repair centre.

 

The apartments are designed so not to overlook the two adjacent plots and not to impede the right to light principle of a 45° splay from the corner of existing windows of the adjacent plots. As a result the building steps out towards the centre at the rear and results in two penthouse apartments at second floor with recessed roof terraces with oversailing roof and cheeks to maintain privacy and restrict any sense of overlooking.

 

There is a quaint communal garden tucked away to the rear, whilst parking is kept to an efficient design with generous turning area in order to accomodate a fire engine turning circle.

Waterstone Park

The high specification developer built houses at Waterstone Park represent some of the finer more contemporary houses being built in recent times. With their oversailing roofs to terrace style balconies, the dwellings form an interesting skyline, coupled with yellow brickwork and grey windows.

Chigwell

A 4 storey development with basement car park and Luxury Apartments ranging from approx. 1200 - 2000sq ft.

Waltham Cross

A select development of a mixture of 8 no. 1 and 2 bed apartments situated within walking distance of the overground train station at Waltham Cross.

North Essex Bed & Breakfast

The original brief was to design the bed and breakfast annex whilst maintaining the character of the existing building and being sensitive to the existing farmhouse.

 

Russell drew up plans for the Annex and with the help of a good planning consultant gained consent for the Annex as a Bed and Breakfast. All three bedrooms have en-suite and views to the horizon within the surrounding countryside.

West London Refurbishment

The project involved constructing a new basement under the existing house, which created a large entertainment space and an additional bedroom with en-suite bathroom. A double height glass rear extension with an open staircase connects the ground floor and the new basement. A new side extension increases the width of the rear section of the house and a new loft extension provides an additional bedroom with en-suite shower. The entire house has been refurbished and this has allowed the property to be converted from 3 bedrooms to a 5 bedroom family home.
